Architect Selected to Design Latino Veterans Memorial in Sacramento

In 1997 the Marine Corps honored the nation's 39 Latino Medal of Honor recipients, 13 of whom were Marines. No ethnic group in the United States has been awarded more Medals of Honor per capita, according to a Marine statement at the the time.

The California Mexican American Veterans Memorial Committee and the California Department of Veterans Affairs announced the selection of the architectural firm that will design the Latino Memorial at the State Capitol in Sacramento.

The California Mexican American Veterans Memorial Committee and the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) are pleased to announce that Quadriga Landscape Architecture and Planning, Inc., has been selected to provide architectural and engineering design services to restore and complete the memorial honoring Latino veterans in Historic State Capitol Park in Sacramento.

“In less than twenty-four months, this project has advanced faster toward completion than at any other time in its history, and I am proud to join the California Mexican American Veterans Memorial’s many supporters statewide in celebrating this important project milestone.” said CalVet Secretary Roger Brautigan. The Memorial is targeted to be rededicated in 2011.

“Since first conceived after World War II by Sacramento mothers wishing to honor their children, many of whom died in combat, several attempts have been made to beautify, enhance and restore the California Mexican American Veterans Memorial to honor the memory and historical contribution of Latino men and women who served in our Armed Forces. We now possess the tools to compete this long overdue tribute,” said Robert Ruiz, Memorial Chairman.

The California Mexican American Veterans Memorial Committee must raise approximately $1 million in private donations to complete the project. No public funds can be used.  Donations are tax deductible, and can be made online at www.mavm.ca.gov, or mailed to: California Mexican American Veterans’ Memorial c/o CalVet, 1227 O Street, Sacramento, CA  95814.

The California Mexican-American Veterans Memorial Beautification and Enhancement Committee was created by SB 599 (Chapter 558 of 2007). The committee is made up of five appointees of the Governor and one appointee of the State Senate President Pro Tempore and one appointee of the Speaker of the State Assembly. The Committee is authorized to establish a schedule for the design, construction and dedication of the enhanced memorial; to solicit and select designs that may be used to beautify the existing memorial; and to solicit and receive contributions that will be used to off-set the costs of the enhancements and beautification project.
