“Struggle”– The Art of Servando García

Servando García’s oil paintings are explorations into personal analogies. His work draws parallels between subject matter and process. The often domestic nature of his subject matter become platforms for expression and spatial exploration. Paintings of walls reveal a response to the potential of a flat space; images of newborn children exhibit a tension of development and process, while paintings of rain indulge the phenomena of dripping paint.

On his most recent work, García comments that he has drawn from his interest in the distortions and patterns that would appear in an old TV set he owned. He defines the TV as a 2-D surface designed to be looked at, much like as canvas. He relates the actual images seen on his TV, such as a football game, to the painting process— a process in which he feels it is very difficult to move forward. García admits that the challenge to synthesize his ideas and approach to painting is a Struggle.

Servando García obtained his BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute in 2000 and his MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007.  He lives and works in San Francisco. Togonon Gallery recently presented Servando’s new paintings in a solo exhibition. This is Garcia’s second solo exhibition at Togonon Gallery in San Francisco.
